Invasive Species Squad
Do you have a love-hate relationship with invasives: hate to see them, love to remove them? If you don’t mind using some tools and getting a bit dirty, this role is perfect for you!
Role Responsibilities
- Follow directions and work in a team to physically remove a specific invasive plant species using necessary hand tools (spade, clippers, etc)
- Identify target invasive species and know the differences from similar native species.
Qualifications
- Comfortable hiking in and around forests and wading around wetlands, in various conditions, including rain, heat, and with biting insects
- Comfortable using hand tools ex. Spades and clippers
- Able to confidently identify plant species after learning the key ID features
- Comfortable working in a team and following directions from a leader.
Why we do it
- Invasive species are non-native plants and animals capable of establishing quickly and outcompeting native species due to a lack of natural predators
- Our staff and Land Stewards monitor for invasive species, and if they are discovered plans are established quickly, identifying the best management practices for the species
- We call on the Invasive Species Squad to assist with the physical removal of invasive plants to prevent further spread and allow native species to thrive.
