Property Info

Portage Lake Nature Reserve was donated in 2010 by a group of neighbours who had purchased the property from the Canadian National Railway and had the property directly transferred to Muskoka Conservancy. This property is a thin strip of land between the CNR rail line and the shore road allowance on the western shore of Portage Lake. The property includes an intact shoreline which is an outstanding feature to the property. There is good fish habitat along the shoreline and an abundance of mid-tolerant species such as yellow birch and eastern hemlock on the property. A large patch of painted trilliums can be found on the property each spring. The property is also home to bird and reptile species at risk.
